At Erie Custom Signs, a vinyl cutter is one of the key pieces of equipment in our operations. Originally developed in the late 1980s, vinyl cutters helped to revolutionize our entire industry and made it a more accessible industry for smaller businesses and sign shops to carve out a place in the market. Previously the industry had been dominated by screen printing and hand-lettering. Vinyl cutters get hooked up to computers via normal printer cables or USB ports. You require a special sign-making software on your computer to properly size and edit any of your lettering or artwork. That artwork then gets sent to the cutter electronically so the cutter can complete the project. There are many different forms of software available, including lettering applications and complicated graphic arts programs.
