What Characteristics Should an ADA-Compliant Room Number Sign Have?
Raised characters: Per ADA guidelines, room number signs must have raised, tactile letters and numbers.
All tactile characters should be raised by 1/32 inch and must be at least 5/8 inches high but no more than 2 inches high.
Braille lettering: ADA room number signs must have numerals accompanied by Grade 2 domed or rounded Braille numbers.
Some required Braille dimensions for room number signs include a 1.5 mm to 1.6 mm dot base diameter and a 0.6 mm to 0.9 mm dot height.
Sans serif font: All important text on room number displays must be uppercase and in a sans serif font such as Helvetica or Future.
Characters should not be italic, oblique, script, highly decorative, or have any other unusual forms.
Finish and contrast: ADA-compliant room number signs must have a non-glare finish. A high level of contrast is also required, with 70% being recommended.
This can be achieved by putting light characters on a dark background or vice versa.
Mounting specifications: Room number signs should be installed on the latch side of the door at least 48 inches and at most 60 inches from the floor.
There should be enough clearance so anyone can approach within 3 inches.
