What characteristics should an ADA Elevator Sign Have?
Raised characters: Like any other sign identifying a permanent space, ADA elevator signs are required by law to have raised characters. Tactile letters and numbers must be raised by 1/32 inch. Letters must be between 5/8 and 2 inches tall, while floor numbers must be 2 inches tall.
Font style and type: Key text on ADA elevator signage is also required to be in a specific font style and type to meet compliance standards. Per ADA guidelines, letters must be uppercase and in a sans serif or simple serif font such as Helvetica. Highly decorative text is prohibited.
Braille text: To ensure those with visual impairments can also understand key information on elevator signs, braille text is necessary. Grade 2 braille in a domed or rounded shape should accompany all text. Certain dimensions must also be met, such as 1.5 mm to 1.6 mm dot base diameter.
Finish and contrast: ADA-compliant elevator signage is required to have a non-glare finish such as matte or eggshell. Further, a high level of contrast (70% is recommended) between background and lettering must be present on the signs. Light characters can be used on a dark background or vice versa.
Symbols and pictograms: Floor number elevator signs marking the first level are required to have a star symbol. In case of fire signs often have a pictogram of flames and a figure on stairs. Additionally, elevator identification signs typically use the international symbol of accessibility.
