Characteristics of a Successful Sign Shop
Many of our clients at Erie Custom Signs are sign shops themselves who outsource certain types of jobs to us, including wholesale ADA signage orders. We have developed a lot of close relationships with sign shops of all sizes and types over the years, and being a sign shop ourselves, have had years to analyze the kinds of qualities that make for a successful sign shop that will last for years to come.
Here are a few of those characteristics, most of which apply to all types of small businesses, not just sign shops.
- Collaboration: Any small business owner must be collaborative to become successful. He or she must focus on developing relationships with clients, employees, vendors and other business partners, and implement processes and strategies that benefit everyone. A business owner who is only out for him or herself will have a hard time becoming successful.
- Acknowledgement of capabilities: Sign shop owners must be realistic with what they and their businesses are capable of doing. Not every sign shop can take on massive orders for short turnaround times. Efforts to be able to take on every single type of job or client could spread your business thin and lead to it folding. Instead, successful sign shops understand their limitations as well as their strengths, and either turn down some jobs or look for help in the form of a wholesale provider.
- Customer centric: With the wealth of options available to customers in the world of signage today, it is important for sign shops to be as customer centric as possible, finding any way they can to meet their clients’ needs. Again, while there is a fine line when it comes to knowing your abilities versus your limitations, it is still important to provide options regarding signage materials, textures, finishes, designs and other options. Ability to provide custom designs with signage is a big plus in today’s industry.
- Compliance: ADA compliant signage is always in need for signage customers, so all sign shops must keep a full supply of ADA signage on hand at all times to be able to handle this demand.
