ADA Compliant Signs for Outdoor Purposes
When you think of ADA compliant signs, you likely first think of signs labeling bathrooms, room numbers, directories and room labels. These signs are all made primarily for interior purposes. However, ADA standards don’t simply outline regulations for indoors — all facilities must be compliant both indoors and out.
Therefore, depending on the type of facility you have, you might be in need of ADA compliant signs for outdoor purposes. Examples could include:
- Bathroom signs. Some facilities, especially those at parks, outdoor concert venues or pavilions, have outdoor bathrooms. Regulations for outdoor bathroom signs are basically the same as indoors—use of a pictogram, clear labeling for men’s, women’s or unisex bathrooms, sufficient color contrast, etc.
- Direction signs. Signs giving directions to visitors about where to go on the property must still meet accessibility standards. These signs could include maps, or simply have arrows pointing people in the proper direction to go.
- Parking signs. All parking should be clearly labeled, especially handicap parking spots. All facilities are required to have a certain amount of spaces reserved for people with disabilities, and these spaces must be clearly marked with signs and paint. Signs should include the “handicap” pictogram and include language that states the spot is reserved for people with disabilities only.
- Labeling signs. Signs labeling specific entrances and where doors will take the visitors can help to get people to where they need to go. When these signs are used, they must meet ADA compliance standards.
